PAN'S NIGHTS

©1982.

Pan has bad dreams.
They come for him:
women riding, rearing,
stamping hoofs into his thigh.

Pan screams, turns over.
The slut beside:
"What's the matter, love?"
"I'm going blind!"

She comforts him, begs for a kiss.
He clings, shakes
at the night stand; drinks;

remembers his youth in Greece;
wishes the grass were not as cold
to his bad hip;
knows he must see Orpheus
or a psychiatrist;

wants to get a better job
and a warmer place
to waste middle age.

She knows it's a bad time
t'approach about the rent.
It's time to get married, too:
there's money she's lent
him she needs back.

But his pains and aches are miserable
he hasn't a sou;
the man he hangs around with's strange
Pan doesn't know what to do
