Who is Michael J. Gilbert? Michael J. Gilbert began working as a pewterer in 1986, after having learned many of the required skills as a model soldier enthusiast in his teens. He is self-taught as a sculptor, and largely self-taught as a pewterer as well. His interest as a pewterer is primarily as a sculptor (although 'modeller' is probably a more technically accurate description), with a preference for depicting the human figure. He is fascinated with the effects, sometimes subtle and sometimes dramatic, that can be achieved with the depiction of body language. Although he began by making model soldiers, he now finds it more interesting depicting normal people in everyday settings. Many of his figurines are based on friends and relatives. Michael J. Gilbert was born in 1964, which he occasionally remembers is over three decades ago, and he has lived in Ottawa, Canada for almost all of his life. He feels that his middle initial is both pretentious and enigmatic, while being at the same time of no importance whatsoever to anyone.
