Saul loved just two things:
Jonathan -- a miracle who loved him back --
In whose hands and eyes and quickness,
Even his sometime furies,
Saul saw himself and his dead wife --
And David. . . .
All men knew that shepherd boy was the next Israeli king,
And had all virtues, and never fouled up --
And still . . . respected Saul.
Saul writhed on his couch; hurled spears at David
When the boy sang sweetly to Saul on his lyre;
Hunted David for years in Judean caves, and howled
To be forgiven when David, having captured Saul,
Would not kill him.
Therefore Saul the anointed bit his knuckles bloody,
Welcomed news of the Philistine incursion,
And ran out onto enemy spears
So that he would not see to die before his face
Jonathan -- who was so much like Saul --
But lacked infirmity.
