Olympics ?

Toronto Olympic Bid 2008Some People thought that Toronto should host the Olympics in 2008 (see also TorontoSummerGames.com and the City Olympic Office). They may even clean up the lakefront before they bulldoze it. Bread not Circuses thinks it would be better to spend the money feeding the poor. (No Olympics for Toronto - Beijing for 2008)

MegaCity

In 1996 the provincial (PC/Harris) government decided that it would be more efficient if the 6 cities, that made up Metro Toronto, amalgamated into one MegaCity, known as Toronto. (see the remenants of the "1 Toronto for all of us" campaign) Some services had been shared under the "metro" banner, but each city, elected their own mayor, and delt with their own local issues, such as garbage collection, snow removal etc. All the cities had the same mail-in referendum. on March 3rd 1997. And the result was a resounding NO ,But that didn't seem to matter. January 1st 1998 The amalgamation of the 6 cities ( Toronto, Etobicoke, York, East York, North York and Scarborough) began. We elected Mel Lastman, long time North York Mayor, as the first MegaCity Mayor on November 10 1997. Welcome to Melville ! You will notice that all organizations that once had "Metro Toronto" in their name, no longer use that term.
