Moe Berg - Toronto ON |
|
So now the real Festival begins. I past years we have always seen Moe at
NXNE checking out as many bands as possible. Some years it even seemed like we were
stalking him, as we mysteriously appeared at the same place over and over. So it seemed
appropriate to meet at the Reverb.
Moe normally plays with "The Pursuit of Happiness", tonight he was Solo.
He played 2 different electric guitars and an acoustic one.
The repertoire was made up of old TPOH songs and new songs, interspersed with with
tales of angst and amusement. He played catchy "folk" tunes about
"Angelica" being a free spirit, "Beautiful White" etc. He did not play
"I'm an Adult Now", which he commented on but still didn't play.
I was going to award more hotdogs, but Stephen wanted even less, finding Moe too depressed
and cynical.
I found him poignantly witty. |

Boy Wonder - Boston MA |
|
I had heard,
early on that "Boy Wonder" would be returning to NXNE, and was very much,
looking forward to seeing them again. We saw them last year at the Bovine
Sex Club, Thurs @ 11pm. 4 Hot dogs. At the time they had a rough R&B sort of
sound. I was hoping they would have improved, beyond even their stellar performance from
last year. I was also hoping for a CD. Both my wishes were answered ! Paula Kelly,
Singer, song writer, guitarist, and femme extrordanaire, was shockingly different in
appearance. Sporting a red pageboy with matching feather cuffs on a crazy 20's style
dress. She is still playing her beautiful old maroon hollow body guitar.
New guitarist and keyboardist Josh Arakelian replaces Jake.
Bruce Caporal (drums) and Paul Natale (bass) provide a solid rhythm behind the
wonderfully drippy pop sound. Paula's voice is fantastic. She belts out her instantly
classic songs in a wonderful fashion, that is both unique and ageless. The boys are
providing good backing vocals as well.
During a captivating ballad ("My Favourite Idol" ?), Paula broke a string.
The band was at a bit of a loss, as she attempted to change it. The NXNE clock ticking
away. Eventually the bass player (Paul) picked up the other guitar, and played a great
version of "I'm Kinda in Love" (their website calls it "Turkey Gravy
Stuffing"). I was singing it for days afterwards. The other mishap involved a broken
snare drum. thankfully Girlpope was able to supply a replacement.
Afterwards Paul as very chatty, and gave me a FREE copy of their CD Wonder-Wear.
(It is Wonder-Full).
I recommended that he see Scratching Post @ 1am. I saw a
lot of parallels, between their two bands.
Note that "Gone" on the Boy Wonder CD, has the Rolling Stones riffs that I
had previously heard.
These appear to have left the band with the previous guitar player. |

Ultra Baby Fat - ? |
|
We were not sure where to go, and should have stayed put. We ended up in
the Horseshoe, to see a Band that we thought was supposed to be "Ultra Baby Fat"
from Atlanta Georgia. The band that came on said they were from Buffalo NY. (Why are so
many bands too shy to let you know what they are called ?).
Anyway, the girl with the crochet vest, kind of sang like Janis Joplin. The bass play
had an old Harmony acoustic bass. The fender guitar player was bald.
Unmoved we left after two songs. |

Girlpope - Buffalo NY |
|
Glad we came back, so quickly. Girlpope is a 3 piece driving punk band,
with cheesy attitude.
The guitarist (Mark Norris) had a lounge singer's jacket with bow tie. His shirt had a
pink Elvis on it. The bass player (Rich Campagna) was wearing full suit (and he was still
wearing it later that night !). Brandon Delmont beats the skins, and was not dressed out
of the ordinary.
Girlpope plays a "Dead boys" style punk rock with jangly lyrics and cheesy 60's
style guitar. Some songs remind me of the Velvet Underground's "Sister Ray".
They were really tight and co-ordinated. Songs were quick, fun and to the point.
They worked on a joke, where they asked what the audience paid to get in to gauge the
worthiness of the performance. Essentially as the pass is prepaid, we paid nothing
to see them. I yelled out "a hundred bucks". They did their best to pull
off their $100 performance, falling short only because they ran out of songs with 10
minutes left to play.
Leave them wanting more, I told Mark, and picked up a copy of their CD "Cheeses of
Nazareth" for $10 as well as some large metallic stickers, that
look like a Kraft Dinner box made out of steel. 22% Vitamin P (?) 100% rock & Roll, 0%
real cheese !
Many great pop songs, happy backing vocals. Live they were great, and I will be looking
for a new CD soon.
web site- doesn't work, but may someday. |

Oui.73 - Buffalo NY |
|
Now it was raining out, and we thought we had learned our lesson about
staying put (2 for 2 at the 360) so we didn't want to travel too far.
Oui.73 (pronounced "We-Seventy Three" as if it were a radio station's call
letters) wore eccentric clothing for half the band. The female guitar player (Holly
Ann), had a great jacket, boots, and dyed and cropped hair, that kinda piled up at
the back. The bass player and singer (Richie Coffman) had orange bubble sun glasses, and
reminded us of Andy Warhol. The other members were lacking in over the top fashion sense.
The stage was covered with tiny white lights.
The band started off dragging, but moved into a funkier groove. All in all a little too
slow and draggy, but we enjoyed the performance. Attitude and Image can go a long way
We stayed for about 25 minutes, and I was wondering if we could catch the end of Cory's set at the Elmocambo before Scratching
Post. |

12:30am
- ElMocambo Upstairs - 468 Spadina
Cory - Philadelphia PA |
|
They were running late (previously unheard of at NXNE), so we were able to
catch 3 songs. Cory is a 5 piece with 3 predominant females on vocals, guitar/vocals and
bass.
Drums and a second guitar, round out the male portion in the background.
I found them fun, but certainly not cute.
The finale was an orgasmic bongo chanting song.
I am not sure what I saw, but I was glad that I did !
Steve, not so much. |

Scratching Post - Toronto ON |
|
Everyone was there to see Scratching Post ! We had last seen them 2
years ago at Nxne96 10pm Saturday, at the now defunct Ultrasound
Show bar. They received "best Band" award that year.
All the 360 bands were there. Boy Wonder, Girlpope
(bass player still wearing suit), Oui.73
only Moe was missing, and he showed up before it was over. Also Robyn Black was there in semi
drag, handing out flyers for their show on Saturday 11pm Club Shanghai.
We had always suspected that Nicole Hughes was the brains behind the band. It appears
as if she has replaced all the other band members. The sound is now heavier, harder,
and rougher, but no more flame throwing.
A lot of the same great songs are there with, several new ones. They are just not as
pretty as last time.
Rumour was they were re-recording the first album, which I thought was fine as is.
New album in September, she said.
Steve's comment, I liked them better before Satan joined the band
(Note that on her web page her netname is "demonicole" !) |
