4th Annual North by North East Music Festival
21 Bands - 4 Days

nxne98 - June 1998 - Toronto
NXNE 98North by North East is an annual music festival and pub crawl that takes over downtown Toronto each year in June.
There are hundreds of bands to see (375 this year), but only so many that you can get to, as 25 are playing at any one time, spread out around downtown. The names are mostly unknown, and the quality has been excellent.
Since there are so many bands, no one has the same experience as anyone else. This is ours.

We rate each band based on our overall impression, which is obviously very subjective. The rating system is based on Hotdogs A Hot Dog !, the food of choice for the weekend. Ratings are 1 to 5 with half hotdogs allowed.
Bands receiving 4 or more hotdogs are indicated in the calendar with an "An Excellent Band".
Bands receiving 5 hotdogs were awarded "Best Band of 98" and are marked with a "One of the Best Bands of nxne 98".
Happy facesHappywere awarded as bonus points for bands that were particularly enjoyable, and upbeat.

Previous year's reviews are also online - 1996, and 1997

11pm- Club Shanghai 3 - 247 Spadina
The Strap - Toronto ON
3 Hot Dogs !3 Hot Dogs !3 Hot Dogs !
We started the adventure,a day early. In "China Town", third floor, take the stairs of the Club Shanghai. A recent addition to the Toronto scene it has windows the whole way across the one end that look out onto china town. Just the concept that a club can have windows, is cool. Pool tables too, although their cues were the pits.

The Strap is a fun 4 piece group, with  2 guitars, bass and drums.
They played a 60's garage style sound that reminded me of the now defunct Gruesomes.
They had a fat sometimes jangly guitar style, that was also vaguely ramonesesque.

A good choice of opener for Marky Ramone and the Intruders. I decided that this was where the bar was being set for the weekend. Three Hotdogs for The Strap, let the games begin.

11:30pm - Club Shanghai 3 - 247 Spadina
Tricky Woo - Montreal PQ
3 Hot Dogs !3 Hot Dogs !3 Hot Dogs !
We stepped out to grab a bite (hmmm hotdogs),.We left for 20 Minutes, and they were well into their set, by the time we got back.

Tricky Woo, has a great Thrash Glam style, sounding a bit like Richard Hell at times
Short set, but worth every dog. I think we will be hearing more about these boys, in the future.

Marky Ramone and the Intruders - New York NY
3 and a half Hot Dogs !3 and a half Hot Dogs !3 and a half Hot Dogs !3 and a half Hot Dogs !
We didn't dare go anywhere for fear of missing the main attraction.
For those that didn't know the Ramones played their final show earlier this year. Marky Ramone is their longest running drummer, and the only one to get back out into a touring band, albeit on a smaller scale.

Marky Ramone and the Intruders released a self titled CD earlier this year. At that time they were a four piece (as pictured on the CD) I am going to guess that it is Ben Troken that is no longer in the band. Skinny Bones on vocals and guitar, Johnny Pisano on Bass, and Marky Ramone on drums. Marky still sporting his Ramones hair style

They play the tried and true Ramones style, of speed and pop.
And like the Ramones, they played too loud for the size of the venue
There was a cover of "Blank Generation" which was a pleasant surprise, as well as "Outsider"
We though it translated better live than on the CD, so all in all a good  show.
There was no encore. The small crowd of <100 by that point didn't seem into an encore anyhow.

9pm - Reverb - 651 Queen
Moe Berg - Toronto ON
3 Hot Dogs !3 Hot Dogs !3 Hot Dogs !
So now the real Festival begins.

I past years we have always seen Moe at NXNE checking out as many bands as possible. Some years it even seemed like we were stalking him, as we mysteriously appeared at the same place over and over. So it seemed appropriate to meet at the Reverb.

Moe normally plays with "The Pursuit of Happiness", tonight he was Solo.
He played 2 different electric guitars and an acoustic one.
The repertoire was made up of  old TPOH songs and new songs, interspersed with with tales of angst and amusement. He played catchy "folk" tunes about "Angelica" being a free spirit, "Beautiful White" etc. He did not play "I'm an Adult Now", which he commented on but still didn't play.

I was going to award more hotdogs, but Stephen wanted even less, finding Moe too depressed and cynical.
I found him poignantly witty.

One of the Best Bands, as selected by Mark Jones for nxne 98 10pm - 360 Club - 294 Queen
Boy Wonder - Boston MA
5 Hot Dogs !5 Hot Dogs !5 Hot Dogs !5 Hot Dogs !5 Hot Dogs !Happy
BoyWonder I had heard, early on that "Boy Wonder" would be returning to NXNE, and was very much, looking forward to seeing them again. We saw them last year at the Bovine Sex Club, Thurs @ 11pm. 4 Hot dogs. At the time they had a rough R&B sort of sound. I was hoping they would have improved, beyond even their stellar performance from last year. I was also hoping for a CD. Both my wishes were answered !

Paula Kelly, Singer, song writer, guitarist, and femme extrordanaire, was shockingly different in appearance. Sporting a red pageboy with matching feather cuffs on a  crazy 20's style dress. She is still playing her beautiful old maroon hollow body guitar.

New guitarist  and keyboardist Josh Arakelian replaces Jake.

Bruce Caporal (drums) and Paul Natale (bass) provide a solid rhythm behind the wonderfully drippy pop sound. Paula's voice is fantastic. She belts out her instantly classic songs in a wonderful fashion, that is both unique and ageless. The boys are providing good backing vocals as well.

During a captivating ballad ("My Favourite Idol" ?), Paula broke a string. The band was at a bit of a loss, as she attempted to change it. The NXNE clock ticking away. Eventually the bass player (Paul) picked up the other guitar, and played a great version of "I'm Kinda in Love" (their website calls it "Turkey Gravy Stuffing"). I was singing it for days afterwards. The other mishap involved a broken snare drum. thankfully Girlpope was able to supply a replacement.

Afterwards Paul as very chatty, and gave me a FREE copy of  their CD Wonder-Wear. (It is Wonder-Full).BoyWonder - Wonder Wear
I recommended that he see Scratching Post @ 1am. I saw a lot of parallels, between their two bands.

Note that "Gone" on the Boy Wonder CD, has the Rolling Stones riffs that I had previously heard.
These appear to have left the band with the previous guitar player.

Ultra Baby Fat - ?
1 Hot Dog!
We were not sure where to go, and should have stayed put.

We ended up in the Horseshoe, to see a Band that we thought was supposed to be "Ultra Baby Fat" from Atlanta Georgia. The band that came on said they were from Buffalo NY. (Why are so many bands too shy to let you know what they are called ?).

Anyway, the girl with the crochet vest, kind of sang like Janis Joplin. The bass play had an old Harmony acoustic bass. The fender guitar player was bald.

Unmoved we left after two songs.

11pm - 360 Club - 294 Queen
Girlpope - Buffalo NY
4 Hot Dogs !4 Hot Dogs !4 Hot Dogs !4 Hot Dogs !Happy
Glad we came back, so quickly.

Girlpope is a 3 piece driving punk band, with cheesy attitude.

The guitarist (Mark Norris) had a lounge singer's jacket with bow tie. His shirt had a pink Elvis on it. The bass player (Rich Campagna) was wearing full suit (and he was still wearing it later that night !). Brandon Delmont beats the skins, and was not dressed out of the ordinary.

Girlpope plays a "Dead boys" style punk rock with jangly lyrics and cheesy 60's style guitar. Some songs remind me of the Velvet Underground's "Sister Ray".
They were really tight and co-ordinated. Songs were quick, fun and to the point.

They worked on a joke, where they asked what the audience paid to get in to gauge the worthiness of  the performance. Essentially as the pass is prepaid, we paid nothing to see them. I yelled out  "a hundred bucks". They did their best to pull off their $100 performance, falling short only because they ran out of songs with 10 minutes left to play.

Leave them wanting more, I told Mark, and picked up a copy of their CD "Cheeses of Nazareth"girlpope - Cheeses of Nathereth for $10 as well as some large metallic stickers, that look like a Kraft Dinner box made out of steel. 22% Vitamin P (?) 100% rock & Roll, 0% real cheese !

Many great pop songs, happy backing vocals. Live they were great, and I will be looking for a new CD soon.

web site- doesn't work, but may someday.

Oui.73 - Buffalo NY
2 and a half Hot Dogs !2 and a half Hot Dogs !2 and a half Hot Dogs !
Now it was raining out, and we thought we had learned our lesson about staying put (2 for 2 at the 360) so we didn't want to travel too far.

Oui.73 (pronounced "We-Seventy Three" as if it were a radio station's call letters) wore eccentric clothing for half the band.

The female guitar player (Holly Ann),  had a great jacket, boots, and dyed and cropped hair, that kinda piled up at the back. The bass player and singer (Richie Coffman) had orange bubble sun glasses, and reminded us of Andy Warhol. The other members were lacking in over the top fashion sense.

The stage was covered with tiny white lights.
The band started off dragging, but moved into a funkier groove. All in all a little too slow and draggy, but we enjoyed the performance. Attitude and Image can go a long way

We stayed for about 25 minutes, and I was wondering if we could catch the end of Cory's set at the Elmocambo before Scratching Post.

Cory - Philadelphia PA
2 and a half Hot Dogs !2 and a half Hot Dogs !2 and a half Hot Dogs !
They were running late (previously unheard of at NXNE), so we were able to catch 3 songs.

Cory is a 5 piece with 3 predominant females on vocals, guitar/vocals and bass.
Drums and a second guitar, round out the male portion in the background.

I found them fun, but certainly not cute.

The finale was an orgasmic bongo chanting song.
I am not sure what I saw, but I was glad that I did !

Steve, not so much.

Everyone was there to see Scratching Post !

We had last seen them 2 years ago at Nxne96 10pm Saturday, at the now defunct Ultrasound Show bar. They received "best Band" award that year.

All the 360 bands were there. Boy Wonder, Girlpope (bass player still wearing suit), Oui.73
only Moe was missing, and he showed up before it was over. Also Robyn Black was there in semi drag, handing out flyers for their show on Saturday 11pm Club Shanghai.

We had always suspected that Nicole Hughes was the brains behind the band. It appears as if she has replaced all the other band members. The sound is  now heavier, harder, and rougher, but no more flame throwing.

A lot of the same great songs are there with, several new ones. They are just not as pretty as last time.
Rumour was they were re-recording the first album, which I thought was fine as is.
New album in September, she said.

Steve's comment, I liked them better before Satan joined the band
(Note that on her web page her netname is "demonicole" !)

9pm - Club Shanghai 4 - 247 Spadina
The Harlots - Winnipeg MB
4 Hot Dogs !4 Hot Dogs !4 Hot Dogs !4 Hot Dogs !
This time we were on the quaint 4th floor (take the elevator).

The Harlots are formed from the non-glam half the Ballroom Zombies (see Nxne97 10pm Friday @ 360)
(other members have ended up in Robin Black, and we will meet them tomorrow)

They are a vocally strong, power pop 4 piece with 2 guitars, bass and drums.
The lead singer is very blonde, and had a great voice.
There was lots of energy on stage, and everyone got to sing.

The one guitar player had a lovely old Gibson Les Paul jr.

I found them reminiscent of the Replacements.

Steve's comment - "Please someone give these people a record contract"
Only downside is a lack of image, and a bass player that needs to lose a few pounds.

10pm - Chicago's - 335 Queen
The Farrell Brothers - Selkirk MB
2 Hot Dogs !2 Hot Dogs !Happy
We were in the very crowded closet that is the upstairs at Chicago's.

Gordie and Shawn Farrell, really are brothers, and really are from Manitoba. They are also an acoustic rockabilly duo, with matching Gretch acoustic guitars (with triangular key hole) and piled up hair.
Steve was sceptical of their heritage, but I think they are authentic Manitoba farmers.

They are probably the best amateur act in their area, but to go pro, they have a few issues.
They are very tight and co-ordinated at times, and did a great train imitation on one song with 2 guitars.
They are proficient, but are often sloppy. They played a collection of old classics, and either originals or very obscure covers. The one brother played a mandolin, but it was not clear why.

If they can stick to their roots and play solid songs, they have an act.

11pm - Club Shanghai 4 - 247 Spadina
The Tirekickers - Toronto ON
4 Hot Dogs !4 Hot Dogs !4 Hot Dogs !4 Hot Dogs !Happy
I had wanted to go to Lee's to see "All systems Go", but the Farrell Brothers ran late, and we only had enough time to get back to Shanghai. Once again, a good accident!

When they came on stage, I said, My god these guys look fucking dangerous.
They were !

  1. Chinese guitarist, with glam-style big guitar. He sang many of the songs with his strong accent. Particularly reminiscent was the cover of  "Life's a Bitch". Songs he didn't sing, he provided great backing screams for.
  2. Blonde guitarist & singer, from the suburbs. Stood on the drum kit alot.
  3. Bearded tall skinny bass player
  4. Tattooed drummer.

While some bands have been lacking in personality, these guys had  enough personality for 3 bands !

They play a happy speed metal, mixed with traditional thrash hardcore.
They blew us all away (in more ways than one). Powerful, Fun, Cheesy, Fast
There were some sound problems which detracted somewhat and they also played late (NXNE not cracking the whip). Well worth seeing again.

New CD in September. I think the name is better singular - Tirekicker !
Web page is pretty empty right now.

Betty Goo - Boston MA
2 Hot Dogs !2 Hot Dogs !
Betty Goo are friends of Boy Wonder.

We arrived late, they were playing a slow dirge, and we decided to let them warm into it.
A 3 piece band, the singer/guitarist had a nice red hollow body guitar.

Steve found it pretty, and reminiscent of other Boston Area bands that seem to sound like "The Cars".
I just found that it dragged. The singer didn't project himself talking into the mike, and even the faster songs were depressing.

We didn't stay till the end. We popped our heads in next door, and at the Bovine,  but found our best bet was to make it back to the 360.

A 5 piece - 2 guitars, bass, drum, and a nice cheesy organ. The drummer wore dreadlocks.

They are hard but trebly. There are several Oo-hoo songs, plenty of head bopping songs.
Poppy and Happy ! A better "Weezer" perhaps ?!

Steve said the best all round band he has seen so far.
Yet there is something missing from the sum of the parts. Perhaps it is just because we are tired.

They played a full 50 Minute set. The 360 was quite full at the start, but the audience had petered out somewhat towards the end.

Free CD single of Karen from the Album Popcan was handed out at the door. Not a bad example of their work.
Moe sighting, I also saw him leaving Betty Goo.

Red Elvises - Los Angeles CA (via Siberia)
5 Hot Dogs !5 Hot Dogs !5 Hot Dogs !5 Hot Dogs !Happy
3 guys from Russia and an American. They play rockabilly surf, Russian folk style.

The Red Elvises Red Suits, shoes, and in the case of the bass player red hair, except that it all looked orange under the lights.
The bass player had a huge triangular bass. It was shaped like a bazooki and has only 3 strings.
The singer was a huge burly Russian, that did a good Elvis impersonation singing "Blue Moon", and played a Gretch hollow body guitar.
The other guitar player, was a very skilled player.
The drummer is the only American in the band.

All three frontmen sang, and tossed about clichés. "Canadian Rocks!", they toasted, holding up their beer glass, and  "Of all our audiences..., you are the most recent" etc.
They had high camp value, but were also able to back it up with some great playing.
Most of the songs were a well blended mix of old rockabilly, surf classics and Russian folk music.
They made it all look so easy.
Some notable songs were (click for RealAudio version!) Rocket Man, Harriette, Good Golly Miss Molly, Love Pipe, Surfing in Siberia

Great start to the final night of NXNE 98.
Their Web site has Real Audio versions of all of their songs, from 3 albums.

They were slow to start, with flat vocals from both the bass and guitar player, but I warmed to them as the show went on.

Bass - red hair
Gibson guitar - dark curly hair (Mark Henning, ex of "Pure")
Drummer looked like Alexsi Sales

Does everyone remind us of Paul Westaberg to some degree? seems so.

Robyn Black and The Intergalactic Rock stars - Toronto ON
4 Hot Dogs !4 Hot Dogs !4 Hot Dogs !4 Hot Dogs !Happy
The rest of the Ballroom Zombies (see Friday @9) or at least their leader, Robyn Black is now fronting a 5 man glam fest.

One of the Zombie's weaknesses was that they were only partly glam (see review 1997)

Way over the top, and two thumbs up.  (Steve wanted to give them 6 Hotdogs and 2 smiley faces !)

Robyn was way more enjoyable and a fair bit less annoying than when we saw them last year.
They heavily suggested that the audience submit ballots for favourite unsigned band, which is quite in keeping with his normal on stage behaviour.

They definitely a worked hard at promotion, and it paid off (handing out flyers at the gigs)
I saw very little pre show flyering or postering by other bands. Interesting, considering it obviously helped draw a larger crowd.

Howard Stern impersonator or the real thing ? Strange either way.

Not surprisingly, we could not get into the Horseshoe for the "Royal Crowns" (not that we could have breathed anyway)

So we accidentally returned to the 360, as we have done most previous years.
Wow were we glad.
Great happy pop songs, obviously Beatles inspired, though the one guitarist is apparently a big Replacements fan.

A Four piece, their racial diversity is part of their band personality:

  • Front - Japanese Bass Player
  • East Indian Guitar Player
  • other guitar player had big hollow body guitar
  • Drummer (stuck in the back as usual)

They just rocked with great happy riff filled rock songs and nice sweet backing vocals.
Lots of ooh laa laa songs. Lots of major chords, and a clean trebly guitar sound. Wonderful.

They played a "Cars" cover - "Just what I needed"

- Who is Evelyn ?
Not actually an Evelyn - A piece of Graffiti they had seen
We booed, the guitar player looked shocked, and said, wait it was an ex girl friend.

- They said they had their CD for $10 Canadian.
I yelled out that that was 4bucks US. Again they looked shocked,
and the bass player responded. We aren't too good with exchange rates that's why we picked up these instruments.
- CD is even better than what the band was able to deliver live !

- how do you guys stay so happy for all those songs ?
Lots of Marijuana.

Evelyn Forever - Nightclub Jitters- Did they all go to school together
Yes, but now they were tour, school was over.

- They also were very appreciative of the feamale population of Toronto (at least what they had seen on Queen street.

I Bought their nightclub jitters CD
They had been giving out stickers and little Bio cards.
The website was offline last time I checked.

Perhaps I was crazy for even considering returning to the tiny attic at Chicago's.

We were ready to dub our next band, the ugly as sin boys. Made us believe in Glam Country.
The old cowboy hat, the silk shirt, the mechanics shirt with Elvis embroidered on it.

A 4 piece.
Great guitar player, had obviously made the predominant wear marks in his fender guitar himself.
Big goofy guy in a hat was the singer, and played guitar and again with the mandolin.
Bass player was greasy.
Drummer had a rockabilly haircut.

They played a little too much country hillbilly music, but were fun none the less.

The Horseshoe had emptied enough to let us slip in.
Glad we did.

13 piece swing band, with sax, horns, drums, bass, guitar, clarinet, organ, the whole nine yards.
They played until 2:10 so we got a fair piece of the show.
We saw them play Led Zeppelin - "Rock and Roll" swing style

Lots of people dancing, Great fun ending to bring the evening and members of the orchestra took their shirts off as the evening progressed.

Great dead pan look on Johnny Favourite
The players were good tight and well animated.
The Show is available in RealAudio Format, from Virtual Noise, and pictures of the band from that night are on Chartnet

We missed the John Street Jam outdoor show Saturday Afternoon.
Also the Closing Orange Alert Part at the Big Bop on Sunday.

Club Shanghai - Best new club - Pool tables (though the queues are crappy), window looking out, ok sound, good space, Multi-level.

There is a new PA system at the 360 (about time the old Sneeky Dee's PA was retired)

Many new clubs on College this year, but we mostly stuck to Queen street anyway.

Previous year's reviews are also online - 1996, and 1997
See you next year !
