PORTRAIT OF AN ARTIST

Through wood and over high river
pursuing his hopes like a lover
rides the university teacher.
High in his head the dream
of Plato's academe;
red on his hands are false greetings
from too many faculty meetings.

The horse senses frustration;
it spins and leaps ahead.
The professor plans his article;
he will write thin novels instead.
