CHRISTIAN LIVING QUESTION 82

QUESTION: 82
Are there people that singleness might be the ideal desire of God's will for them?

ANSWER:   The plan of God is set forth in creation as a man leaving his father and mother and cleaving to his wife. Gen 2:24.  However, there are exceptions, as this is not a command, but an option.  It would appear that Jeremiah a mighty prophet of God was never married.  Jer. 16:2, ”Thou shalt not take thee a wife, neither shalt thou have sons or daughters in this place.

Jesus said that there were single men that were that way  for the kingdom’s and gospel’s sake, Matt. 19:11,12, “But he said unto them, All men cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given. For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother’s womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven’s sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.”  It is implied here that it was a special gift from God to be so.

It also appears that Paul was never married yet much used of God. 1 Cor. 7: 7 - 9  “For I would that all men were even as I myself. But every man hath his proper gift of God, one after this manner, and another after that. I say therefore to the unmarried and widows, It is good for them if they abide even as I.  But if they cannot contain, let them marry: for it is better to marry than to burn.

The virgins and unmarried are said to be more able to attend to the things of the Lord, being not married. 1 Cor. 7:32-34 ‘But I would have you without carefulness. He that is unmarried careth for the things that belong to the Lord, how he may please the Lord: There is difference also between a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman careth for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit: but she that is married careth for the things of the world, how she may please her husband.’

Scripture and history certainly verified that the unmarried can be very useful in the things of the Lord.

What about the reader? Whether single or married the most important thing in your life is where you will be in eternity. Heaven or hell,  Jesus is the difference. Repent of your sins and trust him to day. He said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” John 14:6
