Saltspring Island Women Are Doing It!!!
How we raised $15000 in 4 years for Women in
Afghanistan
| 1998 |
Marlene Smith reads a compelling article in Homemaker’s magazine and
Talks to Juliette Laing about “action” Marlene, Juliette
and Diana Knox organize the first Vegetarian Gourmet Middle Eastern
Dinner. All of the women from the Voice of Women did the cooking
for a sold out event for 60 people. A resounding success!
Kay and John Mowbray, former “aid” residents in Afghanistan,
connect the S.S.I. VOW with Mary MacMakin and Parsa (Physiotherapy
and Rehabilitation Support for Afghanistan).

| 1999 |
The second Vegetarian Feast. This time the High School cooking
class students and their teacher cooked and served the dinner. The
VOW members provided the recipes, menus, decorated the cafeteria
and sold the first handicrafts from Afghanistan.
|
| 2000 |
A “High Minded Tea” was held in honour of Mary MacMakin’s
visit to Saltspring Island. The VOW make old fashioned tea sandwiches
and bake desserts. Hats are worn by all and silver tea sets and
candlesticks adorn the Lion’s Hall for another sold out fun
event.

| 2001 |
The third Vegetarian Feast is held at the High School , once
again catered by the students The dinner is a kick-off for the “
Our Island, our World Film Festival”
The fourth Vegetarian Feast was held again at the High School.
The demand for tickets increases because of events in Afghanistan
and we squeeze in 120 people. A large amount of crafts are sold.
A fund-raising “speaker event” is held with Mary MacMakin
as our guest. No food is served. We are astounded at how much we
receive in donations. |
Note: A small group of Saltspring women
have formed a design team to help Afghan women make products that are
more saleable in the North American market. Canadian Women for Women in
Afghanistan (W4WA) sent funds for silk-weaving looms, so we are now focusing
on ideas to use woven silk.
