Paul Naumann A Foot In Coldwater
Unless you're a Canadian (and most likely, even if you are), you're probably thinking, "Who the heck is Paul Naumann?" Good question, but I've got a good answer!
Naumann was the lead guitarist for a Canadian band called A Foot In Coldwater. Foot's commercial claim to fame was the 1972 hit Make Me Do Anything You Want, but to their fans, they were far more well known as a top-notch album band and concert act.
Foot was fueled by Naumann's fluid and tasteful Strat playing. He had the unique ability to make 'clean' sound 'heavy' (if you know what I mean). Naumann rarely relied on distortion for impact: instead he used 'block' chording and well-choosen bends to forge an extremely powerful guitar style.
Having had the pleasure of seeing him play numerous times, the main impression one is left with is his economy of movement. He doesn't flail away with his picking hand trying to coax a flurry of notes. Rather, his right hand floats over the strings, letting meticuously crafted chords and lead lines do the talking.
Unfortunately, the original four A Foot In Coldwater albums are not out on CD, and the vinyl is rare (having long since been deleted). The good news is that two compilations were released in 1983, 'Footprints I' and 'Footprints II', and these are widely available via MCA Canada.
