Shirley Ma holds the distinction of being the only Chinese Jungian Analyst trained in Zurich. Born in Hong Kong, Ma received her Diploma in Analytical Psychology (Ph.D. equivalent) from the C.G. Jung Institute in Zurich, Switzerland, after earning two degrees from the University of Toronto, a B.A. (Honours) in sociology and psychology, and a Master of Science in urban and regional planning. She has been in private practice as a Jungian Psychoanalyst since 1986, first in Zurich, and currently in Toronto. Her movement through life has been guided by inner necessity and by her dreams and intuition. Beginning her professional life as an economic and regional planner, Ma became overwhelmed by feelings of futility and emptiness. She entered analysis and experienced a dream in which she met C.G. Jung, announcing to him that she wanted to connect his psychology with Chinese philosophy and religion. Led by her dream, Ma became a training candidate in Zurich. Here she grew increasingly preoccupied with the Chinese custom of footbinding, and launched herself on an extensive exploration of this archaic custom to elucidate its psychological meaning. This initial venture into writing has been followed by a series of projects exploring connections between Eastern and Western spirituality, based in her own experiences and those of her analysands. Ma lectures widely on Jung's engagement with Eastern philosophy, enhanced by her own understanding of Chinese Philosophy, Religion, and Traditional Chinese Medicine. She also holds a Diploma in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Her work as a Jungian Analyst has been influenced by concepts and symbols from Yoga and Christianity. As a child, Ma's experiences of abandonment and disconnection led her to seek God as a source of companionship. Her inner journey to retrieve this spiritual dimension has become a source for helping others within the context of her work as a Jungian Analyst. Shirley Ma has lectured as a guest faculty member for Jungian societies in Hong Kong, New York, Montreal, Ottawa, Buffalo, and Dallas, and presented papers at conferences in Florence, Italy, Zurich, Switzerland, Toronto, Canada and Guangzhou, Beijing, China. She is a clinical member of the Ontario Society of Psychotherapy, Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts of North America, and a member of the International Association for Analytical Psychology and the Association of Graduates in Analytical Psychology in Zurich. In recent years, Shirley has incorporated Sandplay Therapy in her analytic practice and is currently a member of the Canadian Association of Sandplay Therapists (CAST). Shirley has served as the Senior Training Analyst on the faculty of the Toronto Analyst Training Program. She is also a Quadrangle Member of Massey College, University of Toronto. Currently, Shirley is a training analyst at the Hong Kong Institute of Analytical Psychology and guest lecturer at the Psychology Department, University of Hong Kong. In 2005, she will serve on the faculty of the Carl G. Jung Institute and International School of Analytical Psychology both in Zurich, Switzerland. |
