DOCTRINE QUESTION 109

QUESTION 109:
Mark 16:15 says "Go into all the world and preach the gospel.. those that believe shall (among other things) speak in strange tongues.." The word "shall" does not mean some, or a select few. It means everyone (i.e. "they shall speak in strange tongues"). Should this not be so today?

ANSWER:
It must follow then, that "everyone" must cast out evils, take up serpents, drink deadly things and heal the sick. Do you believe that all should do this as well?

Jesus spoke these works about 33 A.D. Mark recorded them about 63 A.D. This is about thirty years later. The history of the Book of Acts was then completed. What Jesus said they would do, was to "speak with new tongues." Mark looks back over thirty years of history and says this; "So then after the Lord had spoken unto them,... And they WENT FORTH (past tense) and preached (past tense) everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following." (Hebrews 2:3-4) "...so great; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto US (not Paul, for he wasn't there, by them that heard Him (i.e. the eleven disciples). God also bearing THEM (not us) witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to His own will. (Read Mark 16:15-18). These were special sign gifts for the Apostolic age.

These were special sign gifts for the Apostolic age. "Truly the signs of AN APOSTLE were wrought among you..." 2 Corinthians 12:12.

Don't look for signs, but for Christ. "Look unto me, and be ye saved." Isaiah 45:22
