History of
              Wesley Mimico United Church

The history of Wesley Mimico United Church prior to 1925 is the history of two churches, Wesley Methodist Church, dedicated in 1863, and St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, dedicated in 1891. Both churches were functioning in the late 1890's and into the 20th century. Social activity from 1870 to 1880 centered around the two churches.

The Presbyterian church was located at the corner of Mimico Avenue and Church St. (Royal York Road) and the Wesley Methodist Church was built on property now occupied by the John English schoolyard near the gymnasium - close neighbours.

The Methodist congregation worshipped there from 1863 until 1923, when they moved to their newly built church on the corner of Station Road and Mimico Avenue in 1923 and in 1925 became Wesley Mimico United Church.

The Presbyterian congregation did not enter into union quite so easily. Union for them was passed with a scant majority of 33 our of a total membership of 330. The congregation split. The anti-unionists settled across Royal York Road and worshipped in St. Andrew Hall for a few years. They then purchased the church building from the Wesley Methodist congregation.

In 1927, the continuing members of the Presbyterian congregation marched down the street and became part of Wesley Mimico United Church. They took with them a group of very fine, hard working, dedicated men and women.

Today, we are a congregation of 150 people. Our worship service appeals to all ages. We have a combination of traditional hymns and contemporary music. Come out and join us for worship on Sunday.
