ABSTRACTS

DB2 FOR OS/390 V5 PERFORMANCE TOPICS
Hari will share his perspective on DB2 V5 performance highlights and test results, and evaluate the implications and considerations:
- Client/Server and application packages;
- Caching dynamic SQL, Stored Procedures, TCP/IP, DRDA and ODBC;
- Optimizer, partition scans, and parallelism;
- Datasharing, especially for high insert workloads;
- Utilities: Load, Copy, Reorg, Online reorg and Runstats.

DB2 FOR OS/390 PERFORMANCE MYTHS, MISUNDERSTANDINGS AND GOTCHAS
Deluged by HW/SW changes, it is easy to miss or misunderstand the true performance implications.
Hari pierces the fog around some especially confusion prone topics:
- The Dead Pool? - hiperpools today;
- Flood or Flush? - bufferpool thresholds;
- Paralyzed - query parallelism;
- Paths Not Travelled? - I/O Subsystem fantasies;
- That Long Distance Squealing! - distributed access;
- Show Me the Monitor! - effective performance data.
"When you don't know where you are going, any path will get you there."

INFORMATION DISCOVERY: PROBING FOR HIDDEN INSIGHT
An overview of the data mining process is presented. A discussion of the business benefits of data mining and how these benefits provide a cost justification for implementing data warehousing is also discussed. A high level overview of the data warehousing process with some case studies in data mining and data warehousing are reviewed. Some UDB EEE performance measures are presented in the case studies as well as some business case justification.

PRACTICAL TIPS FOR THE MVS/DB2 DBA
Did you ever wonder how to revoke some User Id from your DB2 subsystem without incurring the cost of Cascade Deletes of all the Grants and Privileges that this User Id has given before he/she left your company? Did you ever receive EDM Pool Failures and wondered why it has happened to you when only few "small" objects occupy your EDM Pool? Have you ever been called in the early hours of the morning by Production Support informing you that a Production job failed because one DB2 dataset reached 119 extents and all what was on your mind at that time was to go back to sleep quickly? If you gave a positive answer to these three questions then you may benefit from this presentation.
