ABSTRACTS

DB2 APPLICATION PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS: ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS
Platform: DB2 for OS/390 and z/OS - Audience: All

DB2 provides a comprehensive set of subsystem and application traces. The DB2 Accounting traces provide essential information on application execution and performance.

Often the achievement of good application performance is a matter of having a sound performance methodology, and asking the right questions. This presentation will consider the logical tuning methodology for analyzing DB2 application performance. By asking the appropriate questions this presentation will demonstrate a logical methodology for isolating DB2 application performance problems.

THE DB2-WEBSPHERE SURVIVAL GUIDE
Platform: DB2 for OS/390 and z/OS, and DB2 for Linux, UNIX, Windows - Audience: All

Database performance may have a major impact on the success or failure of a WebSphere project. DB2 expertise is key to many WebSphere projects. DB2 databases are a critical component of WebSphere applications implementations. The challenge is that many WebSphere professionals may not have a complete understanding of DB2 funtion and performance dynamics. Also, DB2 professionals are still learning about WebSphere, and the body of knowledge of ‘best proctices’ is still being formed.
This presentation will focus first on 10 key points about how DB2 operates that database professionals need to explain to their WebSphere colleagues. The presentation will then cover 10 key points that DB2 professionals need to understand about WebSphere. The presentation will finish with 5 important performance considerations. The goal is to highlight critical success factors in a typical WebSphere project.

Ed Woods speaker has over 20 years of experience in the data processing industry, primarily in the area of DB2, IMS, and MVS systems programming. He has been a Systems Engineer with Candle Corporation for more than 10 years, supporting the Candle DB2, IMS, and e-Business product lines.
Ed has presented at IDUG North America, IDUG Europe, Guide, Share, CMG, and at regional DB2 User groups on DB2 technical and performance topics. In addition, he has presented as a part of Candle Performance Road Shows, and has published articles in Candle Computer Report and IDUG Solutions Journal. At IDUG North America 2000, he was named Best Overall Speaker.

DB2 PERFORMANCE SURPRISES: NASTY AND NOT
Platform: DB2 for OS/390 and z/OS - Audience: Intermediate - Advanced

Avoid the pitfalls! Benefit from Hari's experiences, observations and analysis of Redbooks and other information.
Hari exposes interesting performance surprises. Some not so surprising, when you think about the implementation of the feature, while others remain surprising.
Topics include:
- CICS and DB2
- UNION in Views and Nested Table Expressions
- Declared Temporary Tables and Created Temporary Tables
- Scrollable Cursors
- Data Propagator Relational
- user written external UDF's
- Triggers

Hari will also include comments about some V8 line items, where they are anticipated to alter the situation.

Hari is an international expert in DB2 for OS/390 performance, design and exploitation with consulting engagements in Canada and the US. He is a past speaker at the DB2 Technical Conference, IDUG, the IDUG Technical Symposium, the TRIDEX DB2 User Group in New York City and a regular speaker at the Central Canada DB2 User Group. He has been an IBM panelist at the DB2 Technical Conference and the IDUG Technical Symposium. Prior to incorporating, Hari was for many years IBM Canada Ltd.'s country level DB2 for OS/390 expert.

DISASTER RECOVERY AND HIGH AVAILABILITY FEATURES OF DB2
Platform: DB2 for Linux, UNIX, Windows - Audience: Intermediate

This presentation will describe the functions and features of DB2 that assistenable Disaster Recovery and High Availability. Several different scenarios will be described and the pros and cons of each will be examined, allowing the audience to make an informed decision for their particular environment.

Dale McInnis is a senior developmemt manager for DB2 at the IBM Toronto Lab.
