ABSTRACTS

HOW TO BUILD YOUR OWN DB2 PERFORMANCE DATABASE
Platform: OS/390 and z/OS - Audience: All

"How to Build Your Own DB2 Performance Database" is a practical implementation of a DB2 performance database using the DB2 Instrumentation Facility and DB2PM. Monitor user activity (accounting); system thresholds (statistics); lock suspensions/timeouts/deadlocks (locking); audit table access (audit); dynamic SQL, Sort information, Rid Pool details and Buffer Pool statistics at data set level (record traces); set and monitor DB2 thresholds (exceptions)? AND much more!

  1. Introduction to DB2's Instrumentation Facility
  2. Building a DB2 Performance Database
  3. Reporting and Exception Monitoring
  4. Monitoring KEY Performance Metrics and Thresholds
  5. Summary

Joe is currently a Senior Technical Specialist at the Bank of Montreal (Canada). Bank of Montreal is one of North America’s top 10 banks and employs over 35,000 employees, supporting over 2,500 branches worldwide. Joe has been employed at the Bank of Montreal for the past 20 years and has spent the past 17 years working with DB2 in various capacities. He is currently the Bank’s DB2 Strategist/Planner. Most recently, he has architected the Bank’s DB2 Data Sharing processing strategy. Joe has spoken at various conferences including being on the “DB2 System Performance – Panel” at IDUG 93.

DB2 CONNECT: BEST PRACTICES
Platform: Cross platform - Audience: Intermediate

Multi-tier web-based environments are both complex and rich in function. Today's DBAs are expected to have a good understanding of networking and application enablement technologies. This presentation will help you navigate through the maze of technology choices to ensure a successful deployment of multi-tier DB2 for OS/390 applications.
  1. Exploiting DB2 datasharing, VIPA, and other networking technologies for high availability
  2. Tips and techniques for achieving high transaction rates
  3. Knowing which Java drivers to use and how to deploy and optimize for Java
  4. Tips for dealing with issues in Microsoft environments
  5. How to exploit Web Services and XML without being anywhere near the bleeding edge

Leon Katsnelson is a Senior Development Manager at the IBM Toronto Lab. Leon is a recognized expert in the areas of DB2 Application Development and DB2 Connect. Leon has 18 years of experience with complex database and network systems. Over the years he has helped many customers to integrate DB2 into their solutions. Leon frequently presents his experiences at user group meetings and industry conferences.

ANALYZING QUERY ACCESS PLANS IN DB2 USING DB2EXFMT
Platform: Linux, Unix, Windows - Audience: All

The DB2 optimizer usually does a great job choosing good access plans. What if it does not ? Is there a way to improve the plan ? The db2exfmt tool provided with DB2 on Linux, Windows and Unix platforms formats the EXPLAIN output to provide a lot of detail about the access plan chosen for your query. This is a tool popular with DB2 developers when they want to understand access plans. This session will show you how to read this data and what to look for when analyzing plans.

Calisto Zuzarte manages the Query Rewrite component of DB2 on the Unix and Windows platforms. Prior to this he has been involved in various development projects within the DB2 SQL compiler. He specializes in Query Optimization for performance. Calisto is also a research associate in the Centre for Advanced Studies (CAS) at the IBM Toronto Lab.

IMPLEMENTING PEOPLESOFT WITH DB2 FOR OS/390
Platform: OS/390 and z/OS - Audience: All

This presentation will give you a detailed overview of version 8 PeopleSoft HR and Financials implementation at WSIB. The implementation spans multiple platforms such as Websphere on RS/6000, NT server, Application Server on RS/6000 and the DB2 v7.1 database on the OS/390 interacting with Unix System Services (USS) on the OS/390. The relevant information of each component on each platform will be discussed. The flow of PeopleSoft infrastructure logic throughout the whole configuration will be explained and elaborated upon. Although the presentation will be PeopleSoft version 8 specific nevertheless the general architecture discussed will represent a typical architected solution for ERP applications such as SAP and Siebel etc. on the DB2 OS/390 platform.

Nick Nur has been working with DB2 on the mainframe for about 15 years. He is currently working as a Senior DBA at WSIB. Nick has written several articles related to DB2 in various industry journals, and has given several presentations to this DB2 User Group and to other User Groups. He got his Advanced Technical Expert Certification in DRDA / DB2 from IBM in year 2000.

GETTING TO THE CANADIAN TIRE CONFERENCE CENTRE

TTC

The Canadian Tire Conference Centre (CTCC) is located in the Canada Square Complex (2180/2190/2200 Yonge Street). The CTCC is almost immediately above the main entrance to the Eglinton subway station on the second floor in the 2200 Yonge Street building. From the main subway entrance take escalator up to ground level and then the escalator up to the second floor. Follow the signs to 2200 Yonge Street. The CTCC will be on the right as you make your way through the hall. If you pass a bank of elevators, you've gone too far!

For wheelchair access, enter via 2200 Yonge Street, take elevator to the second floor, the CTCC is just north of the bank of elevators.
If you find you need to go up a ramp, you've gone the wrong way.

Driving

Parking is available behind Canada Square Complex off Berwick. Enter the building at the 2190 Yonge Street entrance and follow the signs to 2200 Yonge Street. You will go down a small staircase (a ramp is available for wheelchair access here as well). The CTCC is just past the elevators. (Daily rate is approximately $15/day.)

Parking is available at the Green "P" and other lots on Holly Street (1 block east of Yonge) and at outdoor lots east on Eglinton. From Eglinton East or West, enter the Canada Square complex at the south-west corner of Yonge and Eglinton (Bank of Montreal) and take the escalator up to the second floor. Follow the signs to 2200 Yonge Street. The CTCC will be on the right as you make your way through the hall. If you pass a bank of elevators, you've gone too far!

Parking is available at the Yonge-Eglinton centre. Follow the signs to the subway and before entering the fare-paid area of the subway take the escalator up to the ground level and then up to the second floor. Follow the signs to 2200 Yonge Street. The CTCC will be on the right as you make your way through the hall. If you pass a bank of elevators, you've gone too far!

Please, do not park on neighbourhood streets, on Yonge or Eglinton for an extended period of time, as parking is strictly enforced.
