Great News! John Morrow of TwoMorrows Publishing  has given the green light to a brand new  book on John!

Along the same lines of the career-spanning books that TwoMorrows has published on Dick Giodrano & Murphy Anderson, this book will be focusing on John Buscema's  life as well as his long career in art.

Jim Amash,  a veteran comic book inker and frequent contributor to The Jack Kirby Collector, Alter Ego and other fine publications, has happily agreed to write it and we here at the Official John Buscema Website will also be contributors of artwork and other materials. The book is slated to be out by the summer of 2005, and we will keep you posted as we get more details.

If you have any specific questions about John's life you'd like to see answered in this book, send it along to us and we'll do our best to get an answer from either his family, friends or co-workers!

The second is on the site, Omelete, and the translated version, again with Google.

Jack Kirby Collector # 39

This issue has a transcript of the annual Jack Kirby Tribute panel from the 2002 San Diego Comic Con where the panelists, John Romita Sr. & Todd McFarlane to name a few, took time out from talking about Kirby to share their thoughts on John and his artwork.

It also features Mark Evanier's musings on John's contribution to the stories he drew compared to Jack Kirby.

New Book Celebrates the Artists of The Silver Age

The Silver Age of Comic Book Art written by Arlen Schuler, is a great new book focusing on the art of some of the biggest & most influential artists of the Silver Age.

To our surprise John Buscema is not one of the featured artists of the book but all is not lost because there is 16 extra pages in the Hard cover version, and John's art is displayed as well as that of Curt Swan, Wally Wood, Nick Cardy and Murphy Anderson.

Take heed though because the Softcover version of the book, omits the 16 or so pages from the hardcover, so you won't get to see the  mini-features on  John  and the other 4 guys.

To learn more about the book, visit   Collectors Press

John's last published work, "Superman: Blood of My Ancestors" was released by DC Comics  in September, 2003.

Gil Kane drew the first 24 pages of the book. After Gil passed away, John was asked by DC to draw the rest of story.

Kevin Nolan inked the book and overall it looks pretty good, but Kevin's inking style looks a lot better on Gil's stuff than it does on John's pencils.

John Buscema interviewed on Frazetta Video

This 96-minute VHS video examines the life and art of Frazetta. The artist shares stories of the hardships he overcame to bring his work to the public and the choices that drastically changed the course of his career. Along with extensive interviews with Frazetta himself, plenty of attention is lavished on his paintings. Laspina also interviews Frank's family and art and film luminaries--including Stevens, Schultz, John Buscema, Bernie Wrightson, Brom, Al Williamson, Forrest J. Ackerman, Neal Adams, Bill Stout and many others!

To order the video you can contact art dealer BudPlant.

(We've heard this video was to come out on DVD sometime in December, 2003.)

Sal Buscema Honored with Inkpot

We like to extend our congratulations to John's Brother Sal who recently received the Inkpot Award at last year's San Diego Comic Con. We were told he gave a really nice speech, with lots of great things to say about his late brother John.

Entertainment Weekly Features John

In the Jan. 3, 2003 issue of Entertainment Weekly [#689]  featuring Jack Nicholson on the cover, we were pleasantly surprised to see that John was part of  EW's  annual tribute to 2002's "dearly departed entertainers".

The illustration was done by Drew Friedman, and along with the drawing there is a small article talking about each artist and the spread takes up 2 pages of the mag.

On the left of John, is William "Tex" Henson, chief animator on Rocky & Bullwinkle. On the right of JB, is the great Chuck Jones & last but not least, Dave Berg from Mad magazine.

John Featured in Scarce

Our good friend & fellow Johnny B. fanatic Michel Maillot, sent us a copy of the 44th edition of the slick magazine Scarce from France which features several pages of a phone interview conducted with John in 1995.

Along with the interview, is a long article on John & Stan Lee's work on the Silver Surfer.  If you're interested in getting a copy, try contacting Scarce, at the following link: http://othierry1.free.fr/commander.htm

You can also check out Michel's JOHN BUSCEMA CHECKLIST courtesy of  Europe's biggest Johnny B. fan!!

At the 2002 International San Diego Comic Con, John was FINALLY voted into The Will Eisner's Hall of Fame, along with his friend John Romita Sr..

Also in October of 2002, Big John was honored at a convention in Gijón, Spain. Along with an exhibition of  John's original artwork, there was  a roundtable discussion about John and his work attended by his wife Dolores and daughter Dianne.

The good folks running the con in Spain established an award in John's name to be given out every year to a deserving artist. The first person to receive the John Buscema Award was Trina Robbins.

For more information on the con, follow the link below.

Some great tributes to John Buscema have been published since his passing and two of the best ones were put out by are friends at  TwoMorrows Publishing. The first book was Alter Ego #15 featuring  2 covers we helped paint & design for Roy Thomas.

A/E # 15 is jam-packed with lots of cool articles & stuff on John. The highlight for me is the transcript of a panel that Johnny B. gave at the 2001 San Diego Comic con, where John talked about his work and career with  Mark Evanier.

There's also a interview with John's brother Sal, and Roy Thomas shares his thoughts on working with John for all those years on  The Avengers, Sub-Mariner and Conan.

Along with all of the above & more, A/E  #15 includes plenty of John's  artwork supplied by us and other sources.

Alter Ego # 16 also has a bunch of stuff on John inside it's pages, including a transcript of a panel John was on with his fellow Marvel Bullpen  legends; John Romita, Gene Colan & Marie Severin from the 2001 San Diego con. And if that wasn't enough to get you to pick up a copy of A/E #16, there's also a little article written by yours truly talking about meeting and working with Big John.

Another tribute to John was in Comic Book Artist # 21, which  has a beautiful cover that was painted by John's long time inking partner Tom Palmer. Inside, there's a long article on John & his career and testimonials from 25 of Big John's fellow comic pros, including John Romita, Neal Adams to little ol' me!

Plus, there's an entertaining interview with Johnny B. that was done in 1995 by  Alan R. Woollcombe.

[The flip side of CBA # 21 is devoted to some guy named Adam Hughes ! ;)]

Another mag to look for is The Comics Journal #226. It came out in 2000, so you won't find any  tributes to Big John, but it does have a lengthy &  interesting transcript of a chalk talk that John did for young artists in the Marvel offices sometime in the early 1980's.

This really cool drawing by Johnny B. showing Salden battling the evil Gorrok, was  found in... DC's "Just Imagine Stan Lee's Secret Files & Origins" book.

And check out Avengers #51, to read 2 pages of comments & tributes to John by his friends and fellow pros like Tom Palmer, Walter Simonson, Jerry Ordway and Bruce Timm amongst many others.

Comics Journal #241 also has 4 pages of commentary on John's passing  and his career.

John's very last interview was in  Alter Ego Magazine # 13. Roy Thomas talked to Johnny B. about their work on the classic run of The Avengers, of the late '60s and early '70s.
