CHRSITAN LIVING QUESTION 15
QUESTION 15:
ANSWER:
Is it a sin for a Christian to smoke?
This is a common question, and usually the questioner already has the answer. I remember a brother in Christ putting it this way; I don't smoke for three reasons:
- Physical--It is bad for my health.
- Financial--It is hard on my pocketbook.
- Spiritual--It is bad for my testimony.
Putting these all together, one would have to conclude that is wasn't right. The Bible tells us nothing about smoking, as it was not in existence at that time. However, the whole tenor of the Bible would indicate that it is not becoming to one that professes faith in Christ. Paul says, "All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any. 1 Corinthians 6:12. The worst thing about smoking, or any habit like it, is that you are enslaved by it. The Gospel of Christ liberates a person from such bondage and slavery. It is a sad testimony to see a Christian enslaved by unclean habits. It is a reflection on the "grace of God and His power to deliver." Now, this doesn't mean that one is not a Christian at all if they smoke. But, it does mean they are not a good testimony, and more than likely are not enjoying good fellowship with the Lord. It isn't what you give up that saves you, but what you receive. Every sinner needs forgiveness for what they have done, and eternal life to reach heaven. These are only found in Christ; through trusting in His shed blood for our sins.
