Introductory Statement for
"Endangered Species"In 1987 I began to photograph the forest industry in the Queen Charlotte Islands, documenting the changes occurring there and the devastation resulting from the evolution of the technology used by "modern" forestry practices. In order to broaden my understanding of the issues involved and, gain an insight to the debate about forestry practices, I also photographed the industry on Vancouver Island which, has its own unique set of problems.
"Clayoquot Sound" and, "the Carmanah valley" have captured widespread public attention. Even though both are located on the remote west coast of Vancouver Island, they are relatively media accessible. The Queen Charlottes, on the other hand lie far off the coast of mainland British Columbia, and are thus often overlooked. I felt they deserved closer scrutiny.
