Canada Urged To Reject U.S. Ballistic Missile Defense Agreement
Dr. Janet Eaton, Co-Chair, Canadian Voice of Women for Peace

TORONTO, NOV 11/VOW/ - Following the Pan Canadian Peace Conference “Building the Other Superpower” held in Toronto this weekend the Canadian Voice of Women for Peace (VOW ) voiced opposition to Canada’s announcement that it will enter into a signed agreement with the US on missile defense.

Vow Chairperson, Dr. Janet Eaton stated that “Canadian women must send a message of solidarity to concerned Americans that Canadian Voice of Women for Peace will continue to build on the massive peace movement that emerged across Canada and the world on February 15, 2003. Dr. Eaton further said that “the world faces an unprecedented challenge with the re-election of George W Bush and the U.S. government’s commitment to ‘pre-emptive` strike, Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD), weaponization of space and full spectrum dominance as the world’s pre-eminent power”.

In her talk entitled “Building the Other Superpower” Dr Janet Eaton, incoming Co-Chair, VOW, urged participants to…”honour and learn from the long history of our social and global movements for peace, social justice and ecosystem survival. We stand at a turning point that demands a consciousness of the way change has occurred throughout history and creates an imperative for conscious evolution towards de-legitimizing war and connecting the positive energies for peace that are emerging across the planet.”

Marion Pape, Past Co-Chair of VOW called on the Canadian government to “cancel any secret government commitments made without consultation in our own parliament or with Canadians. It is unthinkable that Canada could abandon independent foreign policy by signing onto BMD”, said Pape. “The US has abrogated, violated or refused to sign onto multiple treaties -- Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty, Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Outer Space Treaty, Land Mines Treaty, and the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. This is the least Canada can do in the face of blatant American disregard for the will of the world.”
