Postcard for Peace Project Update

Postcard and a pen photoThe Postcards for Peace project, which concluded in the fall with nearly 1500 cards having been collected, has given some Iraqi women a little hope and a sense of connection with women in other countries.

Half of the postcards were sent last year and distributed in Iraq, and the rest will be sent within the next month or two to be distributed through the Organization of Women's Freedom in Iraq and KEDE, a women's organization in Greece directed by Margarita Papandreou.

Security is still a problem for the distribution of the cards. However, we were told by those who handed out the cards that women's responses varied in three ways: Some had known previously of support for Iraqi women in other parts of the world, and were pleased about it; some were surprised that women in other parts of the world, especially in Canada and the United States, think about the Iraqis suffering and pain; some women cried when they saw photos of children on these cards from the West, saying "Now we are not alone, there is someone thinking of us." This kind of response indicates that the personal nature of the project made an impact - those who participated and made cards have reason to feel the effort was fruitful.
