If I turn over a new leaf will I not be saved?

ANSWER:
That only covers up the "old leaf." "...and God requireth that which is past." Ecclesiastes 3:15. God does not cover your sins up and judge you on the basis of how you live, since "turning over a new leaf." Sin must be completely removed from His holy eyes. He has provided a way to do this.

In the Old Testament He had believers make blood sacrifices for their sins. This atoned or covered their sins until Christ came. Hebrews 10:4 says, "For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins." These were made every year for the same sins, but they did not take away sin. It was only when Christ came and died that sin was put away. "...but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself." Hebrews 9:26. The words "put away" means to disannul [cancel], or abolish.

God does not judge you the way you are when you die, He looks at your life from the cradle to the grave. He knows all your sins, past, present, and future. He took all your sins and laid them on His Son. He poured out His righteous judgment on these sins when they were upon Christ. In this way, He has provided forgiveness, or dismissal of all our sins, but only to those who trust in Christ as their Sin-bearer. sp; You cannot trust Him and your own efforts at the same time. In order to trust, you must let go of everything else, then look to the Saviour alone for salvation.
