I would like to know how I can be sure I am saved? I have come forward in church and said the sinner's prayer but still don't know if I am saved.

ANSWER:
Salvation has a good foundation. It has one foot on the sacrifice of Christ for sins and the other on the sure word of God. Since God has made no promises regarding coming out in church or saying the sinner's prayer, you have no foundation that would give you a knowledge of being saved.

To know for sure, you must trust in the sacrifice of Christ for your sins and believe the promises of God. Salvation is by faith alone. You receive it by faith and you know it by faith. "Now faith is the substance (establishing) of things hoped for, the evidence (proof) of things not yet seen." Hebrews 11:1. Faith is a firm conviction of something you have heard but not yet seen. It is not positive thinking, which comes from the imagination alone. Faith originates in God who has provided and promised salvation to all in Christ. It rests of facts. God says you do this and I'll do that. You do this, come to Christ by faith as a lost, guilty sinner and "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, (God says I'll do my part), and thou shalt be saved." - Acts 16:31. Assurance lies in believing in the shed blood of Christ for sin and in believing what God promises to those who believe. This establishes, "the thing hoped for." You do not mysteriously come to know you are saved and then believe it, but you believe it because God says so. He cannot lie, Titus 1:2. Maybe your problem is you do not believe what God says.

Trust in Christ alone for salvation, believe God and be saved today.
